If you visit any NC500 forum, you’ll regularly see the debate of “Is West Best” and with some regularly positive assertions, it does lead to some people racing up the east coast without even a coffee stop believing there is nothing worth seeing there.
The west coast is spectacular, the road winding along the coast surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. It’s wild and untamed, the villages are charming and quaint. You’ll find some of the best beaches in Scotland here with almost tropical water and white sand, like Clachtoll, Achmelvich and Oldshoremore. These are served well by caravan parks and tourist accommodation, most are well rated by previous visitors.

The roads on the west are generally winding and narrow, the driving takes effort and attention, especially when you’re not just looking out for other vehicles, you’re also looking out for sheep and wildlife who free roam.

Popular west coast stops of note are a drive over the impressively steep Bealach na Ba pass to Applecross, a pie in Loch Inver, a day spent on Achmelvich beach, a walk through Smoo Cave at Durness, a photo opportunity at the ruined Ardvreck Castle and maybe a quick visit to the highland cows at the Torridon Resort, where they also have an impressively stocked whisky bar…
By comparison, the roads on the east coast are largely better quality with two way traffic. You may still meet an animal crossing the road! There are more established towns and there are plenty of shops, supermarkets and petrol stations punctuating the journey.
There are rolling hills, softer than the west and they are lit by gorse or heather depending on the season. The sea views are beautiful, with sandy beaches from Dornoch to Helmsdale, evolving into rocky coastal cliffs the further north you go.

Popular east coast stops of note are Dornoch Beach, Dunrobin Castle Golspie, Whaligoe Steps, Duncansby Stacks and John O Groats. It’s worth seeking out some hidden gems like a walk to the Pink House at Loch Glass, a dip in The Trinkie sea pool near Wick and a trip to Dunnet Bay, with its nearby distillery, are all worth adding to your route.

In short, to try and compare east versus west is like trying to compare a peacock to a swan. They are both beautiful in their unique way, one could not, and in my opinion should not, choose one over the other.
Take your time; seek out the sights and experiences that will make great memories. There is something beautiful around nearly every corner…
